Superb hand painted full plate (8 1/4"h x 6"w) tintype portrait of a young man. We often see painted full plate tintypes, but rarely of this caliber. The incredible handling of his blue, blue eyes, the shading on his face, the delicacy of the brush strokes in his mustache and hair, and the charming detail of the two-tone stitching on his shirt, all combine to create a true work of art. In the lower right corner are a series of numbers, and perhaps initials, painted in red. I believe that it was framed at one time, as there is a very faint ghost of an "oval" around the portrait. There are a few patches of "orange peeling" to the outer edges of the plate, and there is some fine crazing and one light scratch to the surface. Otherwise, that shouldn't stop anyone from owning this extraordinary piece which is in excellent condition. $150.00 SOLD |
