Beautiful set of twelve gelatin silver prints of Frankfurt am Main, Germany by Dr. Paul Wolff (1887-1951) and Alfred Tritschler (1905-1970). Wolff, who set up a photography studio in Frankfurt shortly after the first World War, went into partnership with Tritschler in 1925. The pair went on to enjoy great success and, amongst many other commissions, were the official photographers of the 1936 Berlin Olympics. These twelve photos, done circa 1930, are of Frankfurt landmarks. Each photo, 7"h x 5"w (18 x 13 cm), is attached to a white linen-backed paper mount (8"h x 6 1/2"w), with title and credits on the verso. They are, respectively from top left; "Blick über die Dächer auf Römer und Dom", verso of first photo as an example of all twelve, "Blick vom Römerberg zum Dom", "Der Römer", "Das Goethehaus am Hirschgraben", "Haus zur goldenen Waage", "Der Römerberg", "Der Dom / Seitenaltäre und Bogenfenster", "Der Dom / Grabplatten und Wandgemälde", "Am Roseneck", "Die Hauptwache mit der Katharinenkirche", "Maininsel", and "Goethehaus / Wohnzimmer" (5"h x 7"w). Generally in fine, clean condition with gorgeous toning, save for light dampstaining to verso of some mounts, and mild dampstaining to front of photo titled "Der Römer". Click on each image for a larger view. A poignant photographic record of a city whose rich historic heart, before it's destruction by air raids in March, 1944, comprised one of the most perfect examples of a late medieval urban center in Germany. Scan of mounts and other titles available upon request. $195.00, the set. SOLD |

Here's a great unusual and enigmatic CDV image. The subject is standing in profile completely covered in a hooded, winter-weight coat and heavy fur-skin gloves. He's in the process of "loading" a double-barreled shotgun. Strung over his shoulder is a bag that reads "Lake Superior, Mich." on the flap. Hanging from this bag is the days' "kill", a fowl of some kind. Backmark of "R. S. DeLamater, Hartford, CT." There is also a pen-cancelled, blue two cent internal revenue stamp affixed to verso. Is this someone having fun with studio props, or is the subject posing to commemorate a recent hunting trip out to the Great Lakes? Touch of glue seepage to edges of photo, else in excellent condition. $125.00 SOLD |

Absolutely charming, delicately tinted pair of 1/6 plate ambrotypes of two young sisters. They're both wearing the same exact outfits. A short black dress with green and white striped ribbons at the shoulders, white pantalets, a beaded necklace and both are holding a tiny blue bag on a chain. The younger girl is looking very unhappy, or perhaps she's just trying her hardest not to move! Both in superb condition, housed together in a split case. $150.00 SOLD |

1/6 plate tintype of three identified young lumberjacks. There's a piece of paper affixed to the back of this plate that reads; "J. H. Stoelker, Fred Snyder, Emil Archard / Taken at Point Lookout in 1879". This image came out of a Saginaw, Michigan album. There's a Point Lookout in Arenac County, Michigan, about an hour north of Saginaw, on the shore of Saginaw Bay. Though this was the great Michigan logging era, I'd never seen lumberjacks in these hats before! But after further research I found photos in Michigan archives that show river crews and boom workers wearing them. I believe that the photo was taken in an itinerant photographer's wagon. J(ohn) H. Stoelker (1858-1945) went on to become a very respected citizen of Saginaw, co-publishing the newspaper "The Daily Saginawian", and living to the ripe old age of 87. Some wear to the edges, else clean with a nice, unmarked surface. Uncased. A terrific piece of Americana. $150.00 SOLD |

Wonderful unmounted albumen print, 9 1/4"h x 7 1/4"w (23.5 x 18 cm), of a courtyard in Nuremberg, Germany. Photographer unidentified but there are two stamps to verso of print. One is an inventory stamp that reads;"287. Pickertshof, Nürnberg". The other is an oval vendors stamp (Theodor Schiener). This photo of "Alt Nürnberg" fairly bristles with ornamentation! The winged dragons, the crowned eagles, the hanging metal signs, the beautiful wrought iron gates to the street, the other elaborate wrought iron pieces leaning against the walls, the various fountains topped by statues (one of which is Hermes), and the heavily carved table and chairs. Circa 1875. Very small "chip" and tear to upper right edge of print. Else, in fine condition. Scarce and unusual subject matter. $40.00 SOLD |
CI-28 |
Beautiful 1/6 plate daguerreotype of a young woman, set in a thermoplastic frame (Berg 7-43/Geometric) that measures 4 3/4"h x 4 1/4"w. CDV60 |
Great studio CDV of a young couple. Their pose, the way they both look confidently into the camera, the clothing worn, the tone and clarity all combine to make this an exceptional image. The man is holding in his hand what appears to be a contemporary cartes de visite album. Backmark of "J. Halstead, Milton, PA"., with residue of a tax stamp. $25.00 SOLD |
TT78 |
Superb Native American 1/6 plate tintype studio portrait of a "Chief Shopnigon", posing in elaborate full dress with a pipe in his hands, and a ball club resting against one knee. That's the name written in pencil beneath this image in the album it was in. As the album had Saginaw, Michigan origins, I believe the subject is very possibly of the Chippewa tribe, though I admit I am not expert on this subject, and could find no reference to this name in any internet search. But what a splendid image! There is some loss of focus to the bottom quarter, but that is not a condition issue which is, frankly, as-new. Beautiful clarity and toning with almost no surface marks, and a lovely mat gloss. Uncased. Very rare, both subject and condition. $745.00 SOLD |
CI-29 |
Terrific 1/6 plate ambrotype of two well dressed, similarly bearded young men. The man on the left rests back in his chair with one hand clasping his coat lapel, while the other man, with just the hint of a smile, leans forward very slightly with one hand on his companion's thigh. Clean and sharp image with a touch of pink tinting to the cheeks. Housed in a simple beveled half case. Very nice. $175.00 SOLD |

"Women Doing a Man's Job". This is a very intriguing pair of gelatin silver prints, 4 3/4"h x 3 3/4"w (12 x 9.5 cm), that raise more questions than they can ever (?) answer. In the first photo a woman poses dressed in a man's suit and tie, her hair tucked under a cap, rubber boots on her feet, sitting on a log with an axe in one hand and the other hand slipped into her vest pocket. Behind her is a log pile still partially covered in snow, a few wintry trees and a small barn or woodshed. In the second photo the same woman has actually added a "moustache" and has a pipe in her mouth, posing with the axe head resting on the log, while next to her stands another woman, dressed exactly the same in men's cloths with a cigar in her mouth and both her hands tucked into her pants pockets. Both photos are in near fine condition and are attached to brown beveled mounts measuring 7"h x 5 3/4"w. Scans of mounts available upon request. Scarce and very collectible subject matter. Circa 1910. $95.00, the pair. SOLD |
TT48 |
Terrific 1/6 plate tintype of a very well dressed boy and two men posing in a photographer's studio sporting a bowler and stovepipe hats. The rather crude pink tinting of the cheeks only adds to the interest of this image with it's superb focus and clarity. Housed in a gilt ruled cream paper sleeve. $25.00 SOLD |
CI-46 |
1/6 plate daguerreotype portrait of a man stamped on the mat "Welling, 226 Bleecker". With his clear, bright eyes he poses with a forthright gaze into the photographer's camera, looking as if he could very easily break out into a smile. But what's truly special about this piece is it's condition. It is virtually as-new, with a lovely soft grey-brown toning, and barely a mark to the surface. The scan hardly does it justice. In addition, there's a hint of tinting to his face. The Rinhart's "The American Daguerreotype" lists Peter Welling as being active at 226 Bleecker Street, New York, from 1850-1859. Housed in a half case. $95.00 SOLD |
TT62 |
Wonderful pair of 1/9 plate tintypes of a child's doll. Is it the same doll with two different outfits, or is it two seperate dolls, perhaps belonging to two young sisters? Both housed in paper sleeves with a Brooklyn, NY backmark. Condition to sleeves is apparent. Both images are slightly bent with attendant hairline fractures to the surface. Else, both are clean with good contrast. Scarce and unusual. $85.00, the pair. SOLD |

A proponent of the anti-slavery movement, he was the guiding force behind the creation of some of the first US army units of black men, including the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry. Backmark of "J. W. Black, Boston". Some staining from glue seepage to periphery of image, else in near fine condition. $65.00 SOLD |

Very nice 1/9 plate daguerreotype of a handsome, dark haired young man with a pleasant countenance. Tarnish "halo" around edge of mat with a few scattered spider molds. Else, clear with fine contrast. Housed in a worn, split case. $ 55.00 SOLD |

Some children have such a mature countenance. This is a lovely 1/9 plate tintype portrait of a swan necked girl with a hint of tinting to her cheeks, housed in a simple blind stamped cream paper sleeve. I love the black banding on her dress. Backmark of "Fernando Dessaur, New York". A few very minor surface scratches to image. $20.00 SOLD |

Endearing studio CDV of a man with his dog. Great shot with the dog's (I believe he's a Cairn or Border terrier) front paws on his master's leg, and the man's stovepipe hat resting on the table next to them. Notice how the dog, unlike his master, is looking straight at the camera! No backmark. Some fading to upper edge of image. Else, clean and bright with great contrast. $40.00 SOLD |

Housed in a half case. $125.00 SOLD |

Very slight warp to mount, else photo in fine, bright condition. $40.00 SOLD |

Here's an extra nice 1/4 plate tintype of a man posing, straw boater in-hand, "by the sea shore". I love the driftwood, the scattered shells and seaweed and, most of all, that terrific painted backdrop with its waves, rowboats and dramatic sky. Note the razor sharp clarity of the white trim on the man's bowtie. Touch of wear to the edges, else in fine, unmarked condition with great contrast and toning. Uncased. $50.00 SOLD |
CI-40 |
1/6 plate daguerreotype of a dark eyed young woman posing primly with her hands in her lap. The photographer has added one small touch of gilt tinting to the brooch in her collar. Here is a beautiful pair of matching, narrow-trimmed 1/6 plate tintypes housed in gilt edged cream paper sleeves with purple paper versos. They could very well be mother and daughter, or even sisters. I like the older woman's long ringlets cascading down over her shoulders, and the very serious pose of the girl. Backmark (only to image of older woman) of the "Portland Photograph Gallery, Portland, (ME)". In addition, written faintly in pencil in a period hand to verso of same image is "Nellie Jones, Boston". Verso of younger image unmarked. There's some very slight "bubbling" to the emulsion along the edge of the first image. Otherwise, both images are in fine condition with gorgeous deep contrast and toning. $23.00, the pair. SOLD |
CDV173 |
Vignetted portrait CDV of a young, blue-eyed Civil War soldier. On the verso is written in burgundy ink in a very decorative hand; "To Miss Emma P. Church / With Compliments / G.J.B.". Unfortunately, there is no backmark to help in identifying the subject (although this image was culled from a Springfield, MA area album) so this will have to suffice as a memento of a young man going off to war. In as-new condition. $25.00 SOLD |
CDV124 |
Here is a truly fantastic and unique CDV. Describing it is the easy part. It's a pair of legs in thick pants and leather boots from the knees down. On one of the knees rests a man's hat, and you can also see a hand holding onto the edge of the board. But to describe the "why" of this photo is almost impossible! The subject is obviously lying on the floor with their legs folded over the board. But is the board perhaps a piece of unused molding? Or a photographer's prop? And what about the realtionship between the subject and the photographer? Maybe they were friends fooling around in the studio after hours? We'll never know. But notice also, all that gorgeous, empty space in the top half of the photo! No backmark. In near fine, clean condition with superb toning. Slightest bow to the mount. $195.00 SOLD |
