"Drawing Pulque". Albumen photograph, 7"h x 5"w (18 x 13 cm), by Abel Briquet, circa 1890. Mounted to a grey board, on which has been written in white gouache below the photo in a decorative hand; "'Drawing Pulque / State of Mexico". With the photographer's signature in the negative, "A. Briquet", in the lower right corner of image. The photograph shows a "tlachiquero" with his long necked gourd siphoning the juice from the maguey plant which is used to produce the traditional alcoholic beverage known as "pulque". Abel Briquet was a French photographer who moved to Mexico when he was comissioned to photograph the construction of several railroads, and remained active there for approximately 25 years, producing several photo albums of Mexican railroads, scenery, the port of Veracruz, etc. Photo has two thumb-sized patches of surface loss to upper left quadrant. Poignant albumen photograph portrait, mounted as a cabinet card, of Ivy Irene Adams. Attached to the verso of the mount is an obituary, cut from a newspaper, stating that Ivy passed away in Bozeman March 19, 1899, at 8 years, 9 months and 19 days. This photo was obviously taken not long before. Studio mark on mount recto of "Elite, Bozeman, Mont." In fine, clean condition. $22.00 |

Superb ethnographic albumen photograph, 5 1/4"h x 4 1/4"w (13 x 11 cm), of three Sámi (Lapp) women, one smoking a pipe, wearing their traditional caps and fringed shawls pinned around their shoulders. The manner in which all three women look forthrightly, even boldly (the woman at the top), into the camera, and the fact that one of them has chosen to pose with her pipe, shows that the subjects were not shy or apprehensive about having their photo taken. Albumen photograph, 9 3/4"h x 7 1/2"w (25 x 19 cm), by Giacomo Brogi (1822-1881). Circa 1870. Blind stamped "Brogi" in lower left corner of photo. Numbered and titled; "4221.ROMA Arco di Druso" in a thin strip at bottom edge. The Arch of Drusus, which crosses the Via Appia, was once part of an acqueduct that supplied the water to the Baths of Caracalla. Mounted to a stiff card board same size as photo. Photo has a crack in top left corner and one in the bottom left corner, with light soiling. Very slight chipping to extreme right edge. Verso of mount torn. Exceptional large albumen photograph, 8 1/2"w x 11"h (21 x 28 cm), by Ferdinand Schmidt (1840-1909) of the Mauthalle in Nuremberg. Erected about 1500, it was one of twelve civic storehouses or granaries in the Altstadt that guarranteed food supplies in times of crisis. Later it housed the city's custom office ("maut"="toll"), and then in the late 19th century was switched to commercial office space and store fronts. Destroyed by World War II air raids, it was re-built, and still stands today on the Königstrasse. Faint blind stamp to lower left corner reads; "Ferdinand Schmidt, Nürnberg". Photo circa 1890. Exceptional large albumen photograph, 10 1/2"h x 8 1/2"w (26 x 21 cm), of the famous "Gänsemännchenbrunnen" (Goose Man Fountain) in the Rathausplatz, Nuremberg. A bronze, late Renaissance scuplture, it depicts a farmer carrying two geese to market under his arms. No discernable blind stamps, but attributed to Ferdinand Schmidt (1840-1909). Photo circa 1890.
