Pair of German photogravures, 4"h x 6"w (10.2 x 15.2 cm), each one mounted to a period beige stiff card mount measuring 9"h x 11"w. The first image is an exterior view of the Römer complex of buildings on the Römerberg in Frankfurt, the second image is an interior view of the Kaisersaal, known for it's collection of 19th century portraits of all the emperors. Note the large marble statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I standing at the far end of the hall. Photos numbered and titled in the negative, but photographer unknown. Circa 1900. Lovely albumen photograph, 5"h x 3 3/4" w (12.7 x 9.5 cm), of Antonio Canova's statue of Hebe, goddess of youth in Greek mythology and cupbearer for the gods. This particular example (Canova created four sculptures of this subject) stands in the National Gallery, Berlin. Faint oval blind stamp of "Photographische Gesellschaft Berlin" in lower right corner. Albumen photograph, 9 3/4"h x 7 3/4"w (25 x 20 cm), of the statue known as the "Apoxyomenos" or "The Scraper", showing an athlete in the act of scraping dust and perspiration form his body with a small, curved tool that the Romans called a "strigil". Based on the bronze original, this Greek marble copy was discovered during excavations in the Trastevere district of Rome in 1849, and now resides in the Museo Pio-Clementino at the Vatican. Albumen photograph, 9 3/4"h x 7 1/4"w (25 x 18.4 cm), of a Roman marble bust of the young Emperor Augustus. In the early 1870's the firm of Fratelli Alinari in Florence began to photograph the art treasures of the Vatican and Capitoline museums in Rome, eventually amassing over the next twenty years a huge stock of images not only of Italian museums, but other European collections as well. This is an early one in their oeuvre and it is numbered in the negative, along with having the relatively scarce block-like "Alinari" blindstamp to the image. This is a Roman marble copy from the 2nd century based on the (now lost) monumental statue of "Athena Parthenos" that stood in the Parthenon.
